  1. Bergen County was one of the first four original counties of New Jersey.
  2. Bergen County’s park system totals nearly 9,000 acres.
  3. Before Dutch and English colonists came, Bergen County was inhabited by Native American people of the Lenape nation. Some of their descendants are still here as part of the Ramapo Mountain Indian tribe, recognized in 1980.
  4. While the origin of Bergen’s name is debated, it is often attributed to the Dutch word meaning “hill” or “place of safety.”
  5. Did you know that Bergen County was the location of several battles and troop movements during the Revolutionary War? In fact, Fort Lee’s location on the bluffs of the NJ Palisades made it a strategic position during the war. The Battle of Fort Lee took place as part of the Continental Army’s attempts to keep British forces from sailing the Hudson River.
  6. This year, U.S. News & World Report continued to recognize the Bergen County Academies in Hackensack as one of the Best High Schools in the United States! Furthermore, In 2011, Newsweek recognized the academy students as having the second highest average SAT score of any U.S. high school.
