The Bergen County Division of Family Guidance provides clinical, residential, educational, correctional, case management, and monitoring services to at-risk children, adolescents, and families, particularly those who are otherwise unable to receive needed services. Through its more than 30 programs, it is Bergen County's resource for youth and families in need.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity is to serve as a Juvenile Detention Officer at the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center located at 200 North Street, Teterboro, NJ 07608.  Juvenile Detention Officers provide an invaluable service to the community while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of youth in their care.  As the only Juvenile Detention Center in New Jersey that is housed within a County Department, JDOs will regularly interface with numerous Division of Family Guidance programs and staff providing clinical and therapeutic services to residents, allowing staff to gain a breadth of knowledge regarding care for at-risk youth in Bergen County.  Working in the chain of command of our modern JDC, Juvenile Detention Officers will gain vital skills, education, and experience that are transferrable to law enforcement/corrections, work with children and families, or work with the justice system.

Job Responsibilities: (may include but are not limited to)             

  • Supervise and/or participate in various programs/activities with juveniles to stimulate interest in and cooperation with various social/education programs.
  • Provide direct supervision and care that ensures the safety, security, health and welfare of the residents and staff.
  • Provides crisis intervention as needed and implement techniques to be used in addressing behavioral and adjustment issues.
  • Assist in the delivery of services as required which includes education, recreation, medical, and social services to ensure that programs are implemented to meet the needs of the residents.
  • Provide written documentation as required in a timely manner and advise of any problematic issues.
  • Learn and utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the facility.
  • Model pro-social behavior and reinforce appropriate social interactions.

Schedule:

  • Full time (40 hours/week). Shift work required. This position will include evenings, holidays and weekends. Shift differential is offered.

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum Associates’s Degree in mental health, Criminal Justice or related field Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Experience working with at-risk youth, preferably in a group/residential setting preferred.
  • Computer literacy (MS Excel and Word).
  • Valid driver’s license.
