Voter Guide: General Information
 
WHO MAY REGISTER TO VOTE IN BERGEN COUNTY?
      You are eligible to register if:
      1.  You are a citizen of the United States
      2.  You are a Bergen County resident 30 days before the election
      3.  You are a resident of the election district in which you live
      4.  You will be 18 years of age on or before the next election
      5.  You are not incarcerated, on parole, or on probation due to a conviction for an indictable
           offense under any federal or state laws.

HOW DO I REGISTER TO VOTE IN BERGEN COUNTY? 

You may register to vote by completing a registration application form at the Bergen County  Superintendent of Elections office or by mail.  Click here for printable form (en espanol).  Forms are also available at any Municipal Clerk’s office, or other public agencies.  For further information, please call the Superintendent of Elections office at 201-336-6100 between the hours of 8:30AM and 4:30PM.

 
DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE IDENTIFICATION WHEN I REGISTER TO VOTE?
 
Pursuant tho the federal “Help America Vote Act of 2002" (HAVA), if you registered to vote by mail in your county after January 1, 2003, and never  voted in a federal election in the county, you were required to provide identification to the Commissioner of Registration. If you did not provide identification to the county  Commissioner or if the ID information could not be verified (i.e.: your driver’s license number or the last four digits of your social security number), you can send a copy of the required identification information listed below, prior to the election, to the commissioner of registration or YOU WILL BE ASKED TO PROVIDE IDENTIFICATION AT THE POLLING PLACE WHERE YOU GO TO VOTE.
 
      Identification may include, but not limited to
      Any current and valid photo ID:
      • Driver’s license
      • Student or job ID
      • United States passport
      • Military or other government ID
      • Store membership ID
      OR 
      • Bank Statement
      • Car registration
      • Rent receipt
      • Sample Ballot
      • Government check or document
      • Non-photo driver’s license
      • Utility bill
      • or any other official document
 
If you show identification, you will vote in the voting machine.
 
If you do not show ID, you vote by a provisional ballot and you will have until the close of business on the second (2nd) day after the election, by 4:30PM, to show ID to the applicable county election office.  You will be given a hand-out at the polling place that will tell you which county election office to contact.
 

WHEN MAY I REGISTER TO VOTE?
Anytime, however, in order to vote in any election, your registration must be received 29 days prior to the election in which you wish to vote.

HOW LONG IS MY REGISTRATION VALID?
Your registration is valid indefinitely, if you have not moved from Bergen County or have not be disenfranchised.

 
 MUST I DECLARE A PARTY AFFILIATION WHEN I REGISTER?
 No, but you may complete a Party Declaration form, at the time, if you choose.
 
IF I MOVE, HOW DO I CHANGE MY ADDRESS?
1.  Moving within Bergen County:  If you move within Bergen County, you must file a written change of address with this office.
 
2.  A voter who moves from one election district to another in the SAME town or moves from one town to another in Bergen County, before election day, and has not notified the Superintendent’s office in writing of this change before the deadline date, must go to your new polling location on election day, in the municipality of your new residence in order to vote on a provisional ballot.  You can call your local municipal clerk or the Superintendent of Elections at 201-336-6100 to locate your new polling place.
 
3.  Moving from/to another county:  If you move to another county, more than 29 days before an election, you must re-register to vote in the new county.  If you move to another county less than 29 days before an election, you vote at your previous polling place in Bergen County for only that election.
 
WHAT IF I MARRY OR CHANGE MY NAME?
If you legally change your name, you must complete a voter registration form and mark the box Name Change.  (Title 19:31-13)

WHEN ARE ELECTIONS HELD IN BERGEN COUNTY?

PRIMARY ELECTION -  held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June.
GENERAL ELECTION - held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. 
Polls for the Primary and General are open from 6:00AM until 8:00PM.

WHEN ARE ANNUAL SCHOOL ELECTIONS HELD?
Annual school elections are held the third Tuesday in April.  They are non-partisan elections to elect members of the Boards of Education and to approve the proposed school budgets.  You must be a registered voter to vote in school board elections.  The law state that polling hours may vary in each school district, but they must be open between the hours of 5:00PM and 9:00PM.  Check your Sample Ballot for polling location and time. 

WHEN ARE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS HELD?
Municipal elections are held at the same time as the General election in November, except for municipalities with a nonpartisan form of government. The polls are open from 6:00AM to 8:00PM.

PROVISIONAL BALLOT
A Provisional Ballot voter is a registered voter who has moved WITHIN the county and his/her voter registration records do not reflect the change.

It is important to note that the former "29 Day Rule" is no longer in effect. Now, a voter who moves from one election district to another in the SAME town or moves from one to another in Bergen County, before election day, and has not notified the Superintendent's Office in writing of this change before the deadline date, must go to your new polling location on election day, in the municipality of your new residence in order to vote. You can call your local municipal clerk or the Superintendent of Elections at (201) 336-6610.

Provisional Ballot voters may contact the Municipal Clerk in their new municipality to locate their new polling place.

A voter who moves OUTSIDE of Bergen County is governed under the following regulations.

1) If the voter has moved less than 29 days before the election, the voter MAY vote at the old polling place. Before voting, the voter must complete and Affidavit of Residence form.

2) If the voter has moved more than 29 days before the election, and has not reregistered in his new county, the voter MAY NOT vote.

The voter may appeal this decision to the office of the Commissioner of Registration for an appearance before a Superior Court Judge.
