Statement
on the Terrorist Attacks
Statement from Pat Schuber/September 12, 2001
“This is a great national
tragedy, reminiscent of the horrible events of
December 7, 1941.
Then as now, Americans must come together to demonstrate the spirit of
community that has served America so well for more than two centuries.
“As County Executive, I wish
I could be home to help shoulder the burden of this tragedy, but I unfortunately
cannot leave Europe at this time. I am attempting to curtail my vacation plans
and get back to New Jersey as soon as possible. In the meantime, I am in constant
contact with my staff about the continuing efforts to provide necessary aid
to New York City and to the victims
of this despicable act of terrorism. I
am also continuing to also monitor recovery activities as they are broadcast
on European Television. I must say that after viewing the broadcasts, I have
never been prouder to be an American. Our nation’s response to this tragedy
has been overwhelmingly positive.
“I want to thank all the
people who have volunteered to help their communities during this crisis. I
also want to commend the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management, the
County Police Force, the County Health Department and all county personnel who
acted professionally and decisively to bring comfort and calm to chaotic
situation. We are seeing the true
American spirit at work, undaunted by tragedy, unbowed by violence, unbroken by
horror.
“This is a time when all Americans
need to come together and work together. I know many people are angry and
frustrated. I ask Bergen residents
NOT to strike out in anger at convenient targets, but to turn that anger into
a positive and productive use for the community. In due time, the perpetrators
of this hideous assault on America will be punished.
“September 11, 2001 is now a
second day that will live in infamy for America. Our response will determine whether we will be judged as a great generation of Americans. We must respond
with compassion, and determination – not more senseless acts of violence.
“I cannot wait to be home, but
in my absence I will continue to pray for those who have suffered personal
losses in this tragedy. The human toll
of this despicable act is yet to be tallied, but I know many families in Bergen
County will suffer. All our efforts
must go to helping support these families in this dark hour.
God Bless America
William Pat Schuber
