Bergen County's Hudson River Waterfront Walkway Design and Implementation Strategy Plan
The Bergen County Department of Planning & Economic Development commissioned a planning study to examine Bergen County’s portion of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway in Edgewater and Fort Lee. The purpose of the study was to investigate how to link together existing and missing walkway segments to create one cohesive linear walkway. The outcome of this effort is a planning report titled: “The Bergen County’s Hudson River Waterfront Walkway Design and Implementation Strategy Plan.”
The study was managed by a project team made up of Bergen County staff and consultants from T&M Associates and Neglia Engineering Associates.
Extensive public and agency involvement was utilized to ensure full representation of those interested in the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway in Bergen County. Two public visioning meetings were conducted to hear issues and concerns from the public.
The first meeting introduced the visioning plan process, a review of existing conditions, and group discussions for meeting participants to describe their experiences and future vision of the Waterfront Walkway. At the second public meeting, the draft Plan was presented detailing the proposed alignments, perpendicular access points, proposed cross section designs, and amenities. Public meetings were also conducted in front of the governing bodies of Edgewater and Fort Lee. The last public meeting was held before the Bergen County Planning Board on December 7, 2010.
Stakeholder interviews were conducted by the Project Team. The purpose of these interviews was to seek the opinions of key stakeholders that have a particular interest in the Waterfront Walkway, and who have significant knowledge of the Waterfront Walkway or visitation.
Three Regional Collaborative Committee meetings were held with representatives from the Boroughs of Edgewater and Fort Lee, NJ Department of Environmental Protection, the Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy, Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey, and other public agencies. These meetings served to develop the Plan’s goals, strategies, objectives, and actions.
Special thanks are given to the Regional Collaborative Committee, representatives of Edgewater and Fort Lee and the public for their participation, interest, and feedback in the development of this plan. This Plan was built off of earlier reports and guidelines developed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
This Plan was made possible by the generous support of the Office of Smart Growth of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
The Plan can be downloaded from this website.
