The Hudson River Walkway in Bergen County

Overview

Bergen County is currently in the process of preparing the Design and Implementation Strategy Plan for the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, and invites you to attend the second of two visioning sessions and help shape the future of Bergen County’s segment of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway.

At the first visioning session, meeting attendees provided general input regarding existing conditions along the walkway, desired improvements along the walkway, and recommended alignments for walkway segments on existing gap sites along the Walkway. Using this input, the project team has created a draft version of the Design and Implementation Strategy Plan that recommends design guidelines for future walkway segments, recommended and alternative alignments for existing gap sites, and proposed amenities intended to enhance the Hudson River Waterfront and provide enjoyment for residents and visitors alike.

By participating in the second visioning session, you will be afforded the opportunity to contribute your ideas regarding the draft Design and Implementation Strategy Plan in an open forum, and participate in facilitated discussions with neighbors, peers and professionals that will help transform the character of your community.

The Design and Implementation Strategy Plan for the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway will serve as the guiding document for the transformation of the Hudson River Waterfront into an attractive recreation venue and means of non-motorized transportation among our communities, and the Hudson County to the South.

Background

Bergen County’s Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, when completed, will be approximately 4 miles in length, beginning at the Hudson-Bergen County Line and the Borough of Edgewater to the south, and ending at the Palisades Interstate Park in the Borough of Fort Lee to the north.  Although a substantial portion of the Walkway has been completed, several “orphan sites” still remain along the waterfront.  Additionally, because no uniform design standards have been established for the County’s segment of the Walkway, completed walkway segments vary in physical design and appearance.

The following maps illustrate the existing conditions of Bergen County’ segment of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway:

Using input from the first visioning session, the project team has produced a draft of the Design and Implementation Strategy Plan for the Hudson River Waterfront. Included in the draft Plan are design guidelines for future walkway segments, amenities proposed along the walkway, and recommended and alternative alignments for existing orphan sites along the walkway. The following maps summarize the proposed and alternate alignments for existing orphan sites, and proposed amenities for these sites.

Visioning

In order to formulate a consensus-based plan that will guide the future design and completion of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, the County will be holding the second of two visioning sessions aimed at soliciting input from County residents and visitors, public officials, business owners, community stakeholders, regional and state agencies, and other interested parties regarding the draft Design and Implementation Strategy Plan.

Your input and vision for the future of Bergen County’s segment of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway is important to us. The second visioning session will be held on May 25, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Edgewater Community Center, 1167 River Road, Edgewater, New Jersey
