Maura R. DeNicola

Maura R. DeNicola was hired by the people of Bergen County on November 2, 2010. On January 1, 2011, she was sworn in to the Board of Chosen Freeholders, and was elected their Vice Chairwoman.

Freeholder DeNicola has already given more than eleven years to public service. She served two terms on the Franklin Lakes Board of Education, ran successfully for Borough Council and in 2006 was elected the first woman Mayor of the Borough of Franklin Lakes. Freeholder DeNicola was a member of the Franklin Lakes Planning Board, Board of Trustees of the Franklin Lakes Public Library, the Municipal Alliance, the Northwest Bergen Mayors Shared Services Committee and the Bergen County Mayors’ Association. In 2009, she was selected “Cool Mayor” by the New Jersey Conference of Mayors for her environmental initiatives.

DeNicola is a nine-year member of the Don Bosco Preparatory High School Board of Trustees. In 2008, she was the recipient of the prestigious Don Bosco President’s Award for Outstanding Community Service. Freeholder DeNicola is an active supporter of Girl Scouts of America and Boy Scouts of America. She and her husband have been committee members of BSA Troop 34 for more than twelve years.

Freeholder DeNicola graduated from Boston College magna cum laude with a B.A. and earned her Master's degree at Columbia University. Her successes as educator and community leader do not diminish the role she considers most importantly, that of mother and wife.

Freeholder DeNicola’s proudest accomplishment is her family. She and her husband of 26 years, Philip, are the proud parents of four wonderful children: sons Philip, Paul and Conor and daughter Lucia. Philip, their oldest, is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and an Ensign in the United States Navy. Paul is currently a Senior at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University. Conor is a Freshman at Marist College and daughter Lucia is a sophomore at Immaculate Heart Academy.

There is no doubt that Freeholder DeNicola is eager to continue her work for the people of Bergen County that she started in 2011. In 2012 she will put her background and experience to good use, chairing the Community Development, Public Works and serving as the Veteran Liaison. Freeholder DeNicola will also be serving on the, Human Services, Parks, Law & Public Safety, Labor & Personnel, Environmental, Ad-Hoc Consolidation, and Planning & Economic Development committees. She will be serving as a representative to the Board of School Estimate, where she will chair the Vocational Schools Board, and the Solid Waste Advisory Committee.

When Freeholder DeNicola took her oath of office on January 1, 2011, she solemnly swore to "support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of New Jersey…under the Authority of the people." She takes this part of her oath very seriously, and serves at the pleasure of you, the people who hired her. Please feel free to contact her office should you ever need any type of assistance.
