Maura R. DeNicola

Maura R. DeNicola was hired by the people of Bergen County on November 2, 2010. On January 1, 2011, she was sworn in to the Board of Chosen Freeholders, and was elected their Vice Chairwoman. She was re-elected to a second term as a Freeholder on November 5, 2013.

Freeholder DeNicola has already given more than eleven years to public service. She served two terms on the Franklin Lakes Board of Education, ran successfully for Borough Council and in 2006 was elected the first woman Mayor of the Borough of Franklin Lakes. Freeholder DeNicola was a member of the Franklin Lakes Planning Board, Board of Trustees of the Franklin Lakes Public Library, the Municipal Alliance, the Northwest Bergen Mayors Shared Services Committee and the Bergen County Mayors’ Association. In 2009, she was selected “Cool Mayor” by the New Jersey Conference of Mayors for her environmental initiatives.

DeNicola is a nine-year member of the Don Bosco Preparatory High School Board of Trustees. In 2008, she was the recipient of the prestigious Don Bosco President’s Award for Outstanding Community Service. Freeholder DeNicola is an active supporter of Girl Scouts of America and Boy Scouts of America. She and her husband have been committee members of BSA Troop 34 for more than twelve years.

Freeholder DeNicola graduated from Boston College magna cum laude with a B.A. and earned her Master's degree at Columbia University. Her successes as educator and community leader do not diminish the role she considers most importantly, that of mother and wife.
Freeholder DeNicola’s proudest accomplishment is her family. She and her husband of 26 years, Philip, are the proud parents of four wonderful children: sons Philip, Paul and Conor and daughter Lucia.

Freeholder DeNicola continues her work for the people of Bergen County that she started in 2011 by putting her background and experience to good use and meeting with committees including parks, public works, vocational schools, labor & personnel, New Jersey legislature and veteran services. When Freeholder DeNicola took her oath of office on January 1, 2011, she solemnly swore to "support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of New Jersey…under the Authority of the people." She takes this oath to heart, and serves at the pleasure the citizens who hired her.
