A Message from the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders

As the economy worsens and the recession is upon the nation, the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders would like to make those that they serve aware of what government and non-profit services are available to them.

Many Bergen County residents have found themselves facing difficult circumstances as the economy falters. However, there are resources provided by the County and by many non profit organizations that can provide assistance during this difficult time.

The Bergen County Board of Social Services offers many different programs that can be applied for, such as Food Stamps, Medicaid (for health insurance), NJ Family Care (Health Insurance for kids), Low Income Home Energy Assistance, Work First New Jersey (Temporary assistance for needy families and general assistance), New Jersey Care for kids (Child Care assistance), Kingship Navigator Program (Assistance for relative care). There is also a Motel Placement program for those who are homeless. The Bergen County website allows easy on-line access to those who wish to apply. Simply go to box on County Services and look for the Board of Social Services. It will guide you through and give you many of the necessary forms on-line.

The Bergen County Department of Community Development also provides services in connection with housing issues. It is a source of funding for families, municipalities and businesses to address housing and economic needs. The Division offers a Homeownership center that works in partnership with the private sector to provide housing counseling information. There are also other programs, such as the American Dream program for first time home buyers and the Bergen County Small Business Program. The office can be reached at 201-336-7200. Community Development also works with the Fair Housing Council of Northern, New Jersey and the Urban League of Bergen County that deal with Foreclosure prevention, an issue many are currently facing. The Bergen County United Way, a charitable organization, has a hot line that people can call for assistance with avoiding homelessness in the event of a foreclosure situation, which is 211.

Another available County resource for those without job is the Bergen County Workforce Investment Board. The Investment Board provides access to various programs that range from job seeking to starting one's own business to existing business development, all skills that are needed during a time of high unemployment. The Workforce Board is located at 11 Carol Court in Hackensack, NJ. There is also a Bergen County One-Stop career Center located at 60 State Street, which provides resources for those looking for employment.

In closing, please know that the Board of Chosen Freeholders are there for those that they represent, especially as we work together to face these tough economic times.

Thank you.

Freeholder Chairman James M. Carroll
