10 Year Old Volunteer Receives Award

At the September 27 meeting of the Bergen County Environmental Council, Alexandra Pardo, age 10, received a Certificate of Appreciation for her participation in the Council's Earth Day plantings since the age of 6. This year, the Environmental Council also had a fall planting on September 30, so Alex was able to use the new shovel she received with her certificate.

Presenting the award is Chairman John DeRienzo, Mayor of Haworth and Freeholder Vice Chairwoman Maura DeNicola.

Enhancing Dahnert's Lake County Park

Two years ago, the Bergen County Environmental Council did a planting at Dahnert's Lake County Park in Garfield. The native plants have grown in very well along the eroded stream bank, adding much needed vegetation to an urban park.

On September 30, 2011, the Environmental Council returned to the park, adding another 300 plants around the lake area. With the able assistance of the Bergen Soil Conservation District, Schneider Electric and many volunteers from the Master Gardeners' program, holes were dug, shrubs planted and grass seed and hay scattered.

Many thanks to all of the volunteers for their efforts, and to County Executive Donovan, Freeholder Vice Chairwoman DeNicola and Mayors Calandriello, Cywinski and DeRienzo for their continued support.
