The
Department of Public Works is responsible for
the design, construction and maintenance of
the county roads, bridges and drainage systems.
The County of Bergen is comprised of approximately
240 square miles. There are over 450 miles of
county roads, 173 county bridges, 358 signalized
intersections and over one million square feet
of buildings occupied by the county. This department
also maintains records of plans and specifications
of intersections, county buildings, bridges
and roadways, traffic ordinances, as well as,
other pertinent data including review of major
building developments affecting the county infrastructure.
The Department of Public Works consists of six
divisions, Operations, Engineering, Administration,
Mosquito, Mail Room and General Services, working
together, to keep the county’s highways, bridges,
creeks, culverts, and buildings in good condition,
while maintaining mosquito control for the health
of the county’s residents.
The
Department of Public Works also oversees all
construction projects within the county in addition
to the repair and maintenance within county
owned buildings and property, custodial and
janitorial services, telephone operations, and
the preparation of plans for new buildings.
The Administrative Garage falls under the authority
of the Public Works Department. The maintenance
and repair of all county vehicles is undertaken
by mechanics working on the over 1,000 county
owned vehicles and equipment.
The Department of Public Works sponsors a tree
replacement program each year for all municipal
government agencies to participate in. Additionally,
the department participates in energy reduction
initiatives sponsored by PSE&G and Rockland
Electric. Public Works has undertaken the initiative
to install LED green and red traffic lights
resulting in reduced maintenance and energy
saving costs.
From bridges to roadways, to maintenance and
administrative support, the Department of Public
Works is a multi-faceted agency working today
for a better tomorrow. |
