  1. CAMP MERRITT WWI CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION

    October 22, 2017, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM @ Camp Merritt Memorial Monument

In this year of commemorating World War I we remember that Bergen County’s Camp Merritt was the largest U.S. Army Embarkation Camp in the nation, where more than 1 million soldiers were lodged on their way to and from the battlefields of Europe. Today the camp’s center is marked by the towering Camp Merritt Memorial Monument, a treasured and important County Historic Site in Cresskill and Dumont. On it are engraved the names of the 578 soldiers and nurses who died here. To honor and remember this camp and its soldiers, a public Camp Merritt WWI Centennial Commemoration will be held at 1 pm, Sunday, October 22, at the memorial. The Keynote Speaker will be Lt. Col. Sherman L. Fleek, US Army (Ret.), Command Historian for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Ceremony will include honor guards and music. At the reception will be a talk by Howard E. Bartholf, historian & author of the recently published Images of America: Camp Merritt.
