Overview

It is the vision of the Bergen County Department of Human Services that good government is responsive to the needs of our citizens. Community participation is vital to an open and responsive government. There is a tremendous commitment of volunteer talent, energy and time devoted to the Advisory Boards and Commissions. Public input enhances the Department's ability to provide the highest quality of service to the citizens of Bergen County.

Human Services Advisory Council

The Human Services Advisory Council (HSAC) is the principle planning body for the department. Established in accordance with the New Jersey Department of Human Services guidelines and the Administrative Code of the County of Bergen, the HSAC is comprised of professionals, consumers and advocates, with a goal to improve the quality of human services for residents of Bergen County. The HSAC’s primary functions are: planning, advocacy, resource allocation and program review.

Advisory Board to Alternatives to Domestic Violence

The ADV Advisory Board began as a nonprofit board of directors in 1978. This 14 member advisory board now works to make program development and policy recommendations to Alternatives to Domestic Violence.

Advisory Board to the Office for Children

The 25 member Advisory Board to the Office for Children was established in 1980 to assess the child care needs in the County, and develop a comprehensive plan to meet those needs.

Advisory Council to the Division of Senior Services

The 25 member Division of Senior Services Advisory Council acts on all matters relating to the development, administration and execution of the Area Plan. Specifically, the council assists in project assessment, funding and decisions, legislative issues, and community education/public relations. In addition, the Division on Senior Services works in partnership with the Hispanic Advisory Committee to address the needs of the Latino community.

Commission on Abused, Exploited and Missing Children

The Commission on Abused, Exploited and Missing Children is charged with developing and implementing a comprehensive initiative to adequately protect at-risk children and to enable parents to properly care for them.

Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women was established in 1975 in order to promote the expansion of rights and opportunities available to women of Bergen County. The Commission celebrated twenty-five years of service to women in the year 2000. Each year the Commission sponsors a celebration in March for Women’s History Month and in August for Women’s Equality Day.

Community Transportation Advisory Board makes recommendations regarding transportation services for seniors and those with disabilities.

Division on Disability Services Advisory Board

The Division of Disability Services Advisory Board has 25 members and six ex-officio members. The advisory board addresses the unmet needs in the community for persons with disabilities, specifically focusing attention on issues regarding Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and interpretation.

Latino Advisory Committee

The Latino Advisory Committee is composed of volunteers with a mission to improve the development and access of county services to the Latino community. Through its informational programs and partnerships, the Commission works to create a culture to encourage full participation of Latinos in the County of Bergen.

Asian-American Advisory Committee

The Asian-American Advisory Committee is composed of volunteers who seek to enhance access to services and cultural understanding between the Asian-American communities and county government. The Committee seeks to address issues relevant to the Asian-American community through informational programs, cultural exchanges, and civic initiatives.

African-American Committee

The African-American Advisory Committee is composed of volunteers dedicated to enhance and expand existing opportunities and resources for African Americans in the County of Bergen. Through partnerships, information exchange, activities to increase cultural awareness and recommended program priorities, the Committee will enhance the full participation of the African-American community in the County of Bergen.

Human Relations Commission

The Human Relations Commission works to encourage, develop, promote and strengthen respect for human rights and cultural diversity within Bergen County. The Commission's goal is to promote tolerance and combat bigotry. Click here to see an HRC statement.

Veterans Advisory Council
