1999
funding
round
of
the
Bergen
County
Open
Space,
Recreation,
Farmland
and
Historic
Preservation
Trust
Fund,
the
Borough
of
New
Milford
received
an
award
of
$488,250
to
help
acquire
approximately
7.5
acres
of
wooded
watershed
property
within
the
Hackensack
River
Corridor.
The
property,
located
at
River
Lane,
Lynwood
Avenue,
and
Roosevelt
Avenue,
provides
diverse
wildlife
habitat
and
vegetation
–
mature
woodlands,
bogs,
marshes,
floodway,
floodplain,
and
the
open
waters
of
the
Hackensack
River
–
for
biological
communities
rarely
seen
otherwise
in
the
area.
In
the
spring,
the
site
is
teeming
with
turtles,
frogs,
salamanders,
snakes,
and
raptors.
Mornings
bring
a
loud
chorus
of
bird
songs
and
blue
herons
feed
here,
gracing
the
riverbanks.
Adjacent
to
a
5.5-acre
parcel
owned
by
the
County
of
Bergen
abutting
the
Hackensack
River,
these
properties
will
provide
for
a
future
riverfront
greenway
along
the
eastern
banks
of
the
Hackensack
River
that
would
stretch
southward
to
the
proposed
Historic
New
Bridge
Landing
Park
and
northward
to
the
County’s
Riverwalk
Park.
