New Milford Woods

Applicant: Borough of New Milford
Trust Fund Award (1999): $488,250
Total Acquisition Cost: $940,000

In the 1999 funding round of the Bergen County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund, the Borough of New Milford received an award of $488,250 to help acquire approximately 7.5 acres of wooded watershed property within the Hackensack River Corridor. The property, located at River Lane, Lynwood Avenue, and Roosevelt Avenue, provides diverse wildlife habitat and vegetation – mature woodlands, bogs, marshes, floodway, floodplain, and the open waters of the Hackensack River – for biological communities rarely seen otherwise in the area. In the spring, the site is teeming with turtles, frogs, salamanders, snakes, and raptors. Mornings bring a loud chorus of bird songs and blue herons feed here, gracing the riverbanks.

Adjacent to a 5.5-acre parcel owned by the County of Bergen abutting the Hackensack River, these properties will provide for a future riverfront greenway along the eastern banks of the Hackensack River that would stretch southward to the proposed Historic New Bridge Landing Park and northward to the County’s Riverwalk Park.
