Campbell Christie House

Owner: County of Bergen
Trust Fund Award: $32,650.00
Project Location: River Edge

The Campbell Christie House is a fine example of a late eighteenth century Dutch brownstone colonial house located within the New Bridge Landing museum complex. It was originally built in New Milford in 1774 and was moved to its present site in 1977 in an effort to save the property from demolition. The building is listed in both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places as part of the thematic listing for Early Stone Houses in Bergen County.

The property is owned by the County of Bergen and operated by the Bergen County Historical society as a tavern museum, interpreted to the early nineteenth century. As part of this interpretation, it is the intention of the County and the Historical Society to reconstruct the frame kitchen wing, which was removed when the building was moved. This wing contained the cooking fireplace and as such, it is the intention of the project to have the fireplace reconstructed as that it may operate for open hearth cooking. Trust Fund funding was provided for historic architectural and historic preservation services.
