HOW CAN I VOTE BY MAIL-IN BALLOT ?

  • You must be a registered voter

  • You must apply for Mail-In Ballot

HOW DO I APPLY FOR AN MAIL-IN BALLOT?

Apply to the County Clerk in writing for a MAIL-IN ballot. Applications are available at the County Clerk’s Election Division office or print out one:  At all Municipal Clerk’s offices in each Municipality.

MAIL-IN BALLOT

Applications must be received (NOT POSTMARKED) in the County Clerk’s office seven (7) days prior to the Election Day by the close of business, but can be submitted at any time prior to the deadline for an Election in the calendar year. The ballot will be sent to the address you request.

 You may apply in person at the County Clerk’s office at any time up until 3:00pm the day prior to an election. If an emergency circumstanceshould arise after the 3:00pm deadline; go to the County Clerk’s office.

You will have to appear before a Judge in order to get a Court Order for the County Clerk to issue a ballot for that Election.

 

WHO CAN APPLY FOR AN MAIL-IN BALLOT APPLICATION?

Anyone can apply for a MAIL-IN BALLOT you have three options

Section 1 you can apply if you need a Ballot for one particular election by putting a check mark for just that Election.

Section 10 Part A by checking off the A box you will be receiving a ballot for every election in that calendar year. In January of each year you will be mailed an application to be filled out for that year, just fill out the application and mail it back for that calendar year.

 Section 10 Part B if you check off the B box you will receive a Ballot for all future November General Elections, until you notify us in writing that you no longer want to receive a ballot for future November Elections.

      Once a        MAIL-IN BALLOT request has been approved by the County Clerk’s Office, the ballot is mailed to the voter they can not vote at his or her polling location for that Election

AUTHORIZED MESSENGER

Any voter may apply for a Mail-In Ballot by Authorized Messenger. Messenger shall be a family member or a registered voter of Bergen County. The voter must designate the Authorized messenger’s name and address (Section 12 of the application) and the voter must sign their name. The authorized messenger must show PHOTO ID and  sign the application in the presence of the County Clerk, or designee, and deliver the ballot directly to the voter. You cannot serve as a messenger for more than Ten qualified voters per Election

 

WHAT IF I AM A CANDIDATE IN THE ELECTION THAT A PERSON APPLIES FOR A MAIL-IN  BALLOT?

No CANDIDATE in the Election for which the voter is requesting a Mail-in ballot can be an Assistor or Authorized Messenger.

 

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I CAN NOT SIGN MY NAME DUE TO ILLNESS OR PHYSICAL DISABILITY?

If you are unable to sign your name the way it appears in the Voter Registry you may indicate your mark with an X in the space provided for your signature. Your name should be printed next to the X and any person providing assistance shall fill in the box and sign name as the assistor.

 

 WHAT IF I ASSIST SOMEONE TO FILL OUT THE APPLICATION?

You have to fill out the mail-in ballot as an assistor providing your name and address and sign the card.

HOW DO I VOTE A MAIL-IN BALLOT  IN THE MILITARY?

A Military Service voter needs to be registered.

·          A member of the armed forces or a spouse/dependent of a member

·          A patient in a veteran’s hospital

·          A civilian attached to or service with the Armed Forces out of State (or a spouse or dependent) residing with or accompanying that person

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A MILITARY MAIL-IN BALLOT?

By obtaining a Federal and Military Mail-in ballot application from the Bergen County Clerk’s office, your Municipal Clerk or from the proper Military personnel. The application is good for two Federal Elections.

WHEN ARE ELECTIONS HELD IN BERGEN COUNTY?

PRIMARY ELECTIONS are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June. The Primary is held to nominate party Candidates for the General Election.

GENERAL ELECTIONS are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November to elect various National, State, County and Municipal officials to office.  Polls are open 6:00 am till 8:00pm.

SCHOOL ELECTIONS are held annually on the third Tuesday in April. They are non-partisan elections to elect members to the Board of Education and to approve the proposed school budgets. You must be a registered voter in order to participate in school board elections. Polling hours may vary in each school district, but they must be open between the hours of 5:00pm and 9:00pm Check with your local school board for the time, or check your sample ballot.

 NON-PARTISAN ELECTIONS ARE HELD ON THE 2ND TUESDAY In May.

SPECIAL SCHOOL ELECTIONS may be held on the 4th Tuesday in January, 2nd Tuesday in March, last Tuesday in September and 2nd Tuesday in December.

All list requests are printed after 3 pm
You may deposit money with the County Clerk Election Division and have the changes automatically deducted from the deposit. We will also fax the requests at 50 cents per page with a deposit.
