"Descendants of enslaved people in colonial America and the USA" - Bergen County Historical Society Lecture Series

Thursday, February 15, 2018

Dr. Evelyn McDowell, Ph.D., Rider Univ., will present a program on the creation of a new lineage society for descendants of enslaved people in colonial America and the United States of America. This organization is called Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage. The presentation will cover how and why the organization was created. She will share who is eligible, describe its objectives, and talk about its past and future events. Many African-Americans believe it is impossible or too difficult to trace their lineage; but with new information frequently coming online, it is increasingly possible to go back many, many generations. She will discuss how she used historical records to find her direct lineage to over 35 enslaved ancestors, how connecting to them changed her life, and her pursuit to encouraging others to do the same. Please join us for refreshments at the conclusion.
