Domestic violence is a tragic problem in our society. Domestic
abuse not only affects those directly involved in abusive situations
and the many children who witness or who are themselves victims
of violence in their homes, but also seriously impacts our communities.
When lives are harmed or lost, both physically and psychologically,
through acts of violence, the entire community suffers. We are all
caught in the crossfire, whether we are friends, neighbors, co-workers,
employers, helping professionals, or taxpayers. Until individuals
and communities come together and take a stand against domestic
violence, the quality of life for everyone in our community will
suffer.
Since 1978, it has been the mission of ADV to end violence as a
part of family life. Working to interrupt the cycle of violence,
ADV utilizes a comprehensive approach to intervention for families
and individuals victimized by intimate partner violence. ADV is
committed to providing services to all those involved in the violent
household. We educate victims, abusers and their families about
the right to live free from abuse. We believe very strongly that
violence is a learned behavior and that it can be stopped. Our approach
is to impact on the problem by providing education and effective
treatment methods to address the problem, by linking individuals
to community resources which can provide assistance, by providing
legal education and referrals, and by increasing public awareness
and understanding about the problem of domestic violence. ADV searches
for the elements of strength in the individual, family and community
which can be mobilized to create positive and sustained change.
With this strength
comes the
confidence
to:
- Believe
in
the
right
to
live
free
of
abuse
- Learn
productive
methods
of
handling
conflict
- Recognize
that,
“While
changing
takes
courage,
it
is
possible
to
love
without
violence.”
