FEMA published their new Draft Flood Maps last year. The comment period for all County residents began April 1 and will end June 28. Every resident near a stream, brook, river or other flood prone waterbody needs to know if their home is affected by potential flooding. If a home is under a mortgage or will be sold in the future, flood insurance may be required. Some homes have been included and some have been eliminated from flood zones since the last mapping was done.
It is the resident’s obligation to determine their own situation. An ‘Elevation Certificate’, performed by a licensed surveyor might be required to determine potential flood inundation of their structure, which determines their flood risk and hence their flood insurance rates. When the comment period ends on June 28, 2015, it will be very difficult to change your flood risk situation.
